For anyone unaware, Ross and I have made it to Africa! We actually arrived about a month ago and have been travelling around Tanzania ever since. I realize that many of my blog posts regarding our recent trip to Guatemala and Mexico have been posting while I’ve been birding a completely different continent. I also realize that might be confusing. I really wish I could post updates as they happen but there’s simply not enough time for that. We are out birding ALL DAY LONG and at the end of the day we are exhausted. Besides, even if there was time, there definitely isn’t WIFI. That said, the news of our time in Africa is coming. The first post drops tomorrow!
I am currently sitting in a hotel in Arusha, one of the nicest towns in Tanzania, hoping that the WIFI starts working again soon. Even in the nicest towns, WIFI can still be limited. We are in Arusha for two nights completing a COVID test and waiting for results so that we can enter Kenya. In theory, I currently have the time AND the WIFI, and I’m hoping to knock out a large portion of the details of what we’ve accomplished so far in Tanzania.
Just know that we’ve targeted some extremely range-restricted species in the last month and have been in some incredibly remote areas searching for and seeing birds that few others have ever seen before. Our Tanzania country list is surprisingly low for the year, only about 420 birds, give or take. With Ross, it’s always quality over quantity.
It has also been a lot of long, steep, challenging hikes and multiple camping expeditions with no access to basic amenities other than a stream, tent, tarp, and if it’s not pouring down rain, a campfire. Thankfully I have some successful stories to tell.
Stay tuned!
