A picture is worth a thousand words. Or so they say.
So instead of bogging this particular post down with whatever adjectives I can find to adequately describe the picture and yet still in no way actually do Victoria Falls justice, I’ve decided simply to share a few photos that I took overlooking a seriously breathtaking scene. We ended our trip to Zambia by visiting the world renown Victoria Falls.
Victoria Falls: the largest sheet of falling water. It is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, but its height and width combined make it the largest. (For perspective, Victoria Falls is roughly twice the height of North America’s Niagara Falls and well over twice its width.)
The mist. The rainbow. The view. The juxtaposition of peace and power. All of this was exemplified by the fact that no one else was there to detract from the grandeur.
I hate to continue to harp on the fact that the whole experience was made better because no one else was there, but… no one else was there and I swear the falls felt less like a major tourist attraction and more like an amazing natural wonder. I realize that the falls can be both simultaneously, but It felt so much more intimate having such an impressive work of nature all to ourselves. I still would recommend a visit, even during peak tourist season, because the falls were insanely beautiful. Definitely one to add to the bucket list or at the end of a birding trip to Zambia!
While Vic Falls is so large that it crosses into Zimbabwe, Zim was still closed due to coronavirus concerns. COVID may have its downsides, but having it to ourselves certainly was a plus! After this, we crossed the border into Namibia and headed south.
